Stuttgart based engineering firm, M+W Group, has been named as the main Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contractor for the delivery of a new waste to energy plant in Hull, UK which will incorporate fluidised bed gasification, anaerobic digestion and solar PV technologies.
The company said that the new Energy Works waste to energy plant is designed to reduce the need to for local landfill as well as relying on fossil fuel generated power to meet local energy demand.
Once operational the plant is expected to be able to generate up to 28MW of electricity, or which around 25 MW will be exported to the grid with 3 MW being used for parasitic load. In addition, a second phase of the development will see the construction of an anaerobic digestion plant that will inject the equivalent of 3 MWt of renewable biogas directly into the national grid. The solar panels will generate around 36 kW of electricity.
Located in the industrial heart of the city, the facility will see the redevelopment of two adjacent brownfield sites covering an area of 12 acres. According to the German contractor, to reduce the need for vehicular transportation and impact of any congestion in the area during the construction and operation of the facility, a special high-line conveyor and access route will be created to connect the two sites.
The engineering firm added that another key feature of the development is the promotion of a better understanding of how new technologies and techniques can transform the way waste is managed. This includes, for example, the latest methods of recycling and the use of alternative fuels to produce sustainable energy.
With this in mind, the new facility incorporates an educational “Energy Academy”, providing modern research and development facilities in collaboration with local Hull University.
Working on the project alongside M+W Group will be two main sub-contractors; Outotec, an international specialist in advanced gasification technology; and Spencer Group, the Hull-based engineering and construction business leading the civil engineering works for the new facility.
As an advanced conversion technology (ACT), this project qualified for a Contract For Difference (CFD) with a strike price of £119.89 (2014 price). This subsidy will be grandfathered for 15 years ensuring long-term renewable energy production and recycling.
In March 2013 year the company secured a £19.9 million grant from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) for the project. (See WMW story)
Construction is due to start in January 2016 with completion scheduled for summer 2017.
