Advanced Disposal said that the decision only affects garbage and yard waste, and that it will provide weekly garbage and yard waste service to over 25,000 homes within the former Macon city limits utilising 95 gallon (360 litre) carts and automated collection vehicles. The yard waste will continue to be collected using traditional rear load collection trucks.

The company added that 13 of the 18 trucks are fuelled by cleaner burning compressed natural gas (CNG).

City staff will collect the residential recycling every other week, as well as on-call bulk waste and excess yard waste (over 2 cubic yards) within the combined Macon-Bibb County limits.

The privatisation of the former city limits of Macon - now a consolidated government with Bibb County - is the second major residential community to privatise with Advanced DIspoal within the last 18 months. The City of Detroit chose to contract with the company for residential solid waste services for 125,000 homes in June 2014.

According to the company privatisation continues to grow across the U.S., as municipalities realise the potential benefits of a public-private partnership.

These benefits were said to include cost savings, quality of service, management efficiency and risk mitigation. The company claimed that in many cases, a solid waste public-private partnership such as between can also stabilise government tax rates.

"Over the last several years, we have seen increasing inquiries from local governments as they contemplate the many benefits of privatisation,” explained Charlie Gray, Advanced Disposal's region vice president.

Advanced Disposal said that it also invested in Macon-Bibb County in September last year with the construction of a $1.6 million (CNG fuelling station at its hauling facility.

"We continue to invest in CNG to not only keep our fleet running cleaner and to create a more sustainable Earth, but this cleaner fuel source also reduces operations costs thereby enhancing stakeholder returns,” said Advanced Disposal CEO Richard Burke.
