Bronkhorstspruit Anaerobic Digestion Deal for Canadian Firm : Anaergia Secures Deal to Operate 4.6 MW Biogas Plant in South Africa

The South African subsidiary of Burlington, Ontario based organic waste to energy firm, Anaergia Inc. has been selected by to operate Bio2Watt’s 4.6 MW anaerobic digestions biogas plant in Bronkhorstspruit, South Africa.

According to Anaergia Africa Proprietary Limited, Africa presents major opportunities for anaerobic digestion. The plant in question produced its first power for the national grid on 10 October 2015.

“We believe that there are tremendous opportunities to convert organic waste into clean energy in Africa,” commented Dr. Andrew Benedek, CEO of Anaergia Inc.

The Bronkhorstspruit biogas facility treats some 120,000 tonnes of agricultural waste per year and produces 20,000 tonnes of fertiliser – in addition to 4.6 MW of electrical energy.

Sean Thomas, managing director of Bio2Watt said that Anaergia’s technical capabilities and international experience led to the decision to appoint this company to help the plant achieve the highest safety and reliability standards.

According to Bio2Watt with over 14 million cattle in South Africa, a significant number of which are held on large farms, the potential for project replication is substantial.

To that end the company is to build, own and operate a second commercial biogas project in Malmesbury in the Western Cape through a special purpose vehicle – the Cape Dairy Project (Pty) Ltd.

Construction of the 4.8 MW project is expected to commence in August 2016.
