Battery & E-Waste Recycling Assistance for Ukraine : EU ‘Twinning’ Project to Help Ukraine Recycle More E-Waste

Ukraine EU E-Waste Batteries Recycling

The European Union is to assist Ukraine in tackling e-waste through a new two year ‘twinning’ project on the collection and recycling of e-waste and used batteries.

The collaboration was officially launched yesterday by Ukraine’s Minister of Regional Development, Building and Housing and Communal Services of Ukraine, in presence of EU Ambassador Jan Tombinski and other dignitaries.

The Delegation of the European Union to Ukraine explained that every year, Ukraine has to dispose 500 million tonnes of wastes in total. Included in that is hundreds of tonnes of harmful e-waste that often contains hazardous substances such as like heavy metals.

In Delegation added that the EU waste legislation, landfilling is the "least preferred option" and recycling is encouraged, in particular for waste containing harmful substances and valuable raw materials like e-waste.

The aim of the twinning project is to bring the Ukrainian waste legislation closer to EU standards by introducing effective and sustainable collecting and recycling mechanisms, in particular for electronic waste and used batteries, a rapidly growing stream of household waste particularly harmful for people and the environment.

"We have to be wise with waste, reducing its negative impact on environment and human health. The EU is moving gradually to a recycling society, reducing waste and using it as a resource wherever possible,” commented ambassador Jan Tombinski.

“Circular economy can be a major source of economic growth and jobs creation one day also in Ukraine, as it is today in the EU," continued the ambassador.

This project is intended to help familiarise stakeholders with European practices and recycling technologies for e-wastes and used batteries, while fostering approximation of the Ukrainian legislation with relevant EU provisions.

On the EU side the project is led by Austria (Environment Agency - Umweltbundesamt GmbH) in consortium with France (Office International de l’Eau) and Spain (Fundación Internacional y para Iberoamérica de Administración y Políticas Públicas - FIIAPP).

On the Ukrainian side, its main beneficiary is the Minister of Regional Development, Building and Housing and Communal Services of Ukraine.
