Landfill Leachate Transformed 'Crystal Clear' Water in Columbia

The VESP system being installed at Buga's landfill site in Columbia 09 February 2012 Emeryville, California based membrane separation systems specialist, New Logic Research, has commissioned a Vibratory Shear Enhanced Processing (VSEP) landfill leachate treatment system at a landfill in Buga, a city of 100,000 people located in western Colombia. According to the company, the 20 hectare landfill receives 570 tonnes of household waste per day from eighteen municipalities in the area. New Logic said that prior to the VSEP installation, rain threatened to overflow the seven leachate ponds at the landfill. With the system now working around the clock, pond levels are being reduced continuously. Landfill leachate is highly contaminated water that collects in the landfill liner beneath the waste deposits. New Logic said that by using reverse osmosis membrane technology, the VSEP system transforms the landfill leachate into crystal clear water for irrigation. The company claimed that where traditional membrane systems would be quickly and permanently coated by the strong contaminants in the leachate, the VSEP's vibration system prevents such adhesion, allowing pure water to pass through the membranes unimpeded. According to New Logic Research CEO, Greg Johnson, the Colombian installation is the latest in a string of leachate installations in Central and South America: "While we've always enjoyed a global customer base, VSEP installations south of Mexico were few until fairly recently". Johnson explained that the company's current success is the result of increased regulatory enforcement, combined with a successful campaign by its own distributor network. The company said that the next phase of the project, already in the planning stages, aims to expand the VSEP system by 100%.
