Monday 16 May saw the premier of an Independent Lens documentary looking at a recycling centre in Oakland City.

The centre has has been the subject of controversy after police shut it down for illegal activity following a campaign by ‘NIMBY’s

The recycling yard been a boon to local homeless people, offering them a way to earn a living collecting and selling recyclable materials.

In the next excerpt, a homeless Oakland, CA man named Jason explains how he precariously carries a huge amount of recycling on a makeshift cart.

Pulling the cart along the road, Jason manages to load up to 800 pounds (360kg) of glass and 200 pounds (90kg) of plastic all at once, as he covers nearly 15 miles (24km) of road on his route.

The next excerpt shows the battle of the Oakland City Council and NIMBYs against Alliance Metals’ recycling centre that many homeless people in West Oakland depend upon for income.

In a city council meeting, street resident Jason argues passionately in favour of keeping it open, only to have the police try to shut it down the next day.
