12km Sponsored Trek to Summit of England’s Highest Peak : WasteAid’s Walk for Waste Event to Raise funds for Projects in Developing Countries

Participants in WasteAid UK’s annual Walk for Waste fundraising event will trek to England’s highest peak, Scafell Pike raising money to deliver practical and low-cost waste services in developing countries.

In its first year, WasteAid UK - a charity set up by waste industry professions - has made a significant impact on thousands of lives. Now, with funding from the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM), the charity is working on a Guide to Appropriate Recycling Technologies for lower-income countries.

From compost and biogas to simple plastics recycling, the Guide will enable even more communities to take control of their waste problem.

Last year 25 enthusiastic participants, representing local authorities (Aylesbury, Cherwell and South Northants, Monmouthshire, Pendle, Cambridge, North Lincs and LARAC), as well as the University of Northampton, Veolia, LARAC, i2i Events Group and Environment Media Group, scaled Wales’ tallest mountain Snowdon.

WasteAid’s Mike Webster added: “Three billion people lack rubbish collection and disposal services, and it’s causing a global health crisis. We partner with local organisations to improve the health, environment and livelihoods of people without waste services.”

“Our focus is on building the skills of local people to deliver practical solutions to the waste crisis in their own communities,” he continued.

WasteAid UK fundraiser Sally Talbot added: “The Walk for Waste will follow a 12km route up Scafell Pike, making a steep climb at the start and then walking through heathery fellside to the summit. The final height is over 975 metres (3200 feet), and the views from up there are awe-inspiring. It’s an opportunity not to be missed!”

Get Involved

Anyone can join as long as they are over the age of ten and fit enough for the climb (those under 18 need to be accompanied by an adult). Trained guides will accompany the group.

“Now is the time to start getting your teams together, giving you plenty of time to get in shape and get the sponsorship rolling in,” urged Webster.

“We’re hoping plenty of people will join us to raise funds for WasteAid UK so we can continue sharing waste management expertise with those who really need it. We’re inviting entries from teams to add an element of competition and excitement to the event. This is a fantastic opportunity to get fit, have fun, and support a very worthy cause,” he concluded.
