Tom Bird, David Blunkett and Frank Heukeshoven at teh launch 19 March 2012 Metals recycler Van Dalen has made a £6 million investment in a Lindemann 1250 ZS ferrous and non-ferrous metal shredder at its UK headquarters in Sheffield. The company said that on average, around 6000 tonnes per month will be processed through the new fragmentiser and shredder, increasing capacity of the Sheffield site by around 60%. "The installation of the shredder in Sheffield transforms our site into a complete metals recycling facility," explained Van Dalen UK managing director Tom Bird. The Moerdijk, Netherlands based metal recycler has an annual production of over 1.5 million tonnes across Europe, and is active in both the ferrous and non-ferrous trade. According to Frank Heukeshoven, Van Dalen group CEO, the company's UK business now accounts for around one third of its global production, with over 35% of the metals processed by the business in the UK being handled by the Sheffield facility. Deputy prime minister and leader of the Liberal Democrats, Nick Clegg (MP for Sheffield Hallam) joined fellow Sheffield MP, the David Blunkett (Labour, Sheffield Brightside and Hillsborough), to officially launch the installation. Following the launch, Blunkett commented: "This imaginative investment is not only in line with the history and tradition of steel and re-processing in Sheffield, but is an example of how, despite the recession, jobs and economic activity can be created." The installation was carried out by the company itself, with support from electrical contractor Welec.
