€160m Energy from Waste Plant to Process 200,000 TPA in Kaunas : 94MW CHP Waste to Energy Deal for Fortum in Lithuania

Finnish renewable energy firm, Fortum, has signed a deal with state-owned Lithuanian utility, Lietuvos Energija to form a joint that will build a waste to energy combined heat and power plant (CHP) in Kaunas, Lithuania (pictured).

The JV, Kauno Kogeneracinė Jėgainė (KKJ) has now agreed deals for the main equipment and the EPCM-consultancy (engineering, procurement, construction and management).

The next stage in the project is finalisation of engineering, with construction activities expected to start in the autumn, 2017. The CHP plant is due to be commissioned in the middle of year 2020.

The total investment in the project was said to amounts to approximately €160 million with Fortum's direct commitment approximately €27 million.

The electrical generating capacity of the Kaunas waste to energy plant is 24 MW and thermal capacity around 70 MW.

The new plant will use annually approximately 200,000 tonnes of local municipal waste to produce heat to Kaunas city district heating network, which serves approximately 111,000 households and 3500 businesses.

The waste to energy plany is estimated to reduce the CO2 emissions by 65,000 tonnes per year. Furthermore, it will significantly reduce the need to deposit waste in the landfill.

Lietuvos Energija, a state owned energy group, owns 51% of Kauno Kogeneracinė Jėgainė shares, meanwhile, Fortum Heat Lietuva has 49% of the shares.
