Biogas Plant to Generate 2.4MW from Food Waste : GE Secures Anaerobic Digestion & Gas Engine Deal for Eco Park in Surrey

International civil engineering and construction company M+W group has selected Jenbacher gas engines and a Monsal anaerobic digestion system, both supplied by GE (NYSE: GE) for Surrey County Council’s new Eco Park waste treatment and biogas facility being built by SUEZ Recycling and Recovery UK in Shepperton, UK.

The engines are to be provided by Clarke Energy, GE’s distributor for Jenbacher gas engines in the UK and will produce energy from 40,000 tonnes of food waste annually from households in Surrey.

GE said that the project is supported by a waste infrastructure grant from the U.K. government and will be located adjacent to an existing community recycling center, about 5 miles (8 kms) from London Heathrow Airport.

Biogas produced at the AD plant will be used to fuel two Jenbacher J416 biogas engines, which the company said are configured to generate up to 50% of the common limit for NOx and will provide a total of 2.4MW of electrical power.

The Eco Park is being built on behalf of Surrey County Council and will supply base load power to the local distribution network while diverting organic waste from landfill.

In addition to the anaerobic digestion and CHP plant, the Eco Park also includes a 55,000-tonne per year gasification facility with pre-treatment, a recyclables bulking facility and a new visitors’ centre

The gasification system will be installed separately and will process municipal waste into a partially renewable combustible gas (known as syngas) for additional power production.

GE said that its scope of work will include the core Monsal process technology, training and plant commissioning. Clarke Energy will provide the two Jenbacher gas engines, which will be built in GE’s facility in Jenbach, Austria, and containerised at the company’s Veresegyház, Hungary, site.

The company’s Monsal solution includes GE’s Re:Sep separation technology, the hydrolysis pasteurisation digestion for full biological treatment of the waste, high chemical oxygen demand/volatile solids conversion to biogas and AmmCycle for the treatment of high-strength ammonia liquor.
