Houston, Texas based Waste Management (NYSE:WM) has opened its 100th natural gas fueling station in Oklahoma City at a ceremony attended by a number of industry representatives, local and state officials.

The company also inaugurated its 6000th natural gas trucks, which it said makes it the largest heavy-duty fleet of its kind in North America.

According to WM its vehicles powered by compressed natural gas emit nearly zero particulate emissions, cut greenhouse gas emissions, and are quieter than diesel trucks.

Waste Management trucks connect to fuel systems at the station and are refueled via a slow overnight fueling process.

For every diesel truck replaced with natural gas, the company said reduces its use of diesel fuel by an average of 8,000 gallons per year along with a reduction of 14 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions per year (the equivalent of a 15 percent emissions reduction per truck).

Waste Management’s use of CNG trucks dates back to the early 1990s and has been heavily expanded over recent years as the firm aimed for a 15% reduction in carbon emissions by 2020 (based on 2007 levels). That goal was achieved in 2011, and with the increasing adoption of natural gas vehicles.

“Waste Management’s mission is to maximize resource value, while minimising environmental impact,” said Jim Trevathan, Waste Management executive vice president and chief operating officer.

“Waste Management invests in building our own fueling infrastructure to refuel our vehicles, while making CNG available to other commercial fleets and individuals,” said Marty Tufte, Waste Management corporate fleet director.

The firm now operates 100 fueling stations in North America, with 25 open to the public. At the company’s public access fueling stations, dedicated fast-fill pumps serve both commercial and consumer vehicles.
