A Microferm cattle waste digestion facility at a dairy farm in Den Bommel, Netherlands has injected 10,000 m3 of biomethane into the national gas grid since it cam eo online in October this year.

Built by bioenergy specialist, HoSt, that plant has a capacity to process around 8000 tonnes of cattle manure annually. According to the company this will typically produce around 200,000 m3 per year, which is equivalent to the consumption of 125 households. The gas is injected directly into the national gas grid of the Netherlands.

HoSt explained that in ordert o do this the biogas first undergos an upgrading process, whereas before the biogas was primarily used to produce electricity and heat.

The company claimed that it is the first plant where 100% manure is digested in combination with the production of biomethane on this scale.

For the upgrading of biogas on such small scale, HoSt is said that it has been awarded with the Jan Terlouw Award, a Dutch innovation award, in 2012.

Microfrem Technology

The Microferm concept focuses on the digestion of 100% manure at farm-scale, without adding co-flows. HoSt said that it has built several Microferm digesters in The Netherlands, France, and Germany.

The plant at the farm in Den Bommel consists of a Microferm digester, gas tight after-storage, and a container containing the upgrading unit, control system and a heat pump.

The comanpy added that the advantage of producing natural gas quality is the maximum energetic efficiency, which is considerably higher than when producing electricity.
