Fabric Made from Recycled PET Awarded Responsible Source Certification

Third-party environmental and sustainability certification, auditing and testing specialist, SCS Global Services has awarded its Responsible Source certification to North Carolina based Unifi Manufacturing, for its REPREVE textile products which are made from recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET). SCS said that the multi-filament polyester and nylon textured yarns produced is the first manufacturer of its kind to earn Responsible Source certification. The organisation added that the Responsible Source standard for the textiles sector was developed to addresses supply chain and manufacturing issues related to the production of un-dyed recycled chips, pellets, and manufactured fibers. Certification is available to manufacturers who screen suppliers for compliance with local environmental regulations, enforce fair labor and workplace practices, and account for human health and environmental life cycle impacts. To gain certification, SCS said that Unifi had shown that its REPREVE yarns and resins are manufactured in a manner which supports environmental and ethical responsibility. As part of this the recycled textile manufacturer tracks energy and water consumption, water discharges, air emissions and hazardous waste disposal. The company also has robust material tracking and traceability mechanisms in place, and maintains strong relationships with its vendors and suppliers. According to Jay Hertwig, vice president of global branding at Unifi, the certification is important to the company as it demonstrates its commitment to responsible manufacturing.
