21 August 2012 UK recycling and waste to energy company, FCC Environment has been awarded a contract by DS Smith Recycling to collect 2000 tonnes of non-recyclable waste from its customers per annum for treatment at its Eastcroft, Nottingham waste to energy facility. The company - formerly WRG and a part of Madrid, Spain based infrastructure company, Fomento de Construcciones y Contratas (IBEX: FCC) - said that the contract includes collecting and treating residual waste from 150 businesses of all sizes across Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. According to C&I director at FCC Environment, Paul Burnell, the company has an ambitious programme of securing waste streams through the development and expansion of a commercial and industrial collection service. FCC added that the contract is in addition to current services provided by DS Smith Recycling - a part of recycled packaing suppler DS Smith (LSE: SMDS). DS Smith Recycling currently operates 23 of its own recycling facilities and said that it has a network of over 500 compliant partners including the Co-Operative Group, CPI Books, Marks & Spencer and the Ministry of Defence. The residual waste collection service is currently being introduced to business customers across Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. The service is expected to be rolled out across the South East and East Anglia later in the year. Tim Price, national commercial manager at DS Smith Recycling said that the latest contract with FCC will help its customers achieve their landfill diversion ambitions. FCC's waste to energy facility in Nottingham generates steam for heating more than 4000 homes and many public buildings in the city, according to the company.
