Machinex Single Stream Recycling Facility Doubles Participation in St. Lucie County, Florida

St. Lucie County, Florida has increased participation in its recycling collections by over 50% since switching from dual residential recycling collections to single stream recycling in May 2014. As part of the switch it also constructed a new material recycling facility (MRF) to process the collected materials, for which is selected Canadian recycling equipment manufacturer, Machinex, to kit out. The company explained that the system purchased by St. Lucie County is designed to process 15 tons (13.5 tonnes) per hour of residential single stream recyclable materials. The facility is equipped with a Drum Feeder for loading the system, Mach OCC Screen, Mach ONP Screen, Mach Finishing Screen, a Dual-Eject Optical Sorter for PET and HDPE, magnet for steel cans, an Eddy Current for aluminum, and a II-Ram Baler. The installation began in May of 2014 and was completed by late September, with the official start-up and ribbon cutting ceremony performed in October 2014. According to Machinex, which supplied the county with efficiency and purity performance guarantees for every commodity in the system, the equipment is meeting, or exceeding, every guarantee. According to Allison Lankow, education and marketing coordinator for the county, the recycling rate in terms of tonnage and participation has increased by more than 50% since its inception last May. Lankow added that in addition to implementing a single stream recycling collection and building the new MRF, the county had invested a tremendous amount of time and money into educating its residents on the recycling program and what items to throw in to the carts.
