Food waste : Mattiussi Ecologia leading the way in food waste
Food waste is no longer just a moral issue, it’s an environmental and financial responsibility. With food waste accounting for up to 10% of annual global greenhouse gas emissions, the UN set achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals #12 “Responsible Consumption and Production” includes the recycling of residual food waste to recover nutrients and biodiversity. (UN Food Waste Index Report 2024 ).
Global and local authorities are taking significant steps towards the food waste management, from reducing to recycling. EU and UK regulations are implementing a more effective food waste collection, making it mandatory and setting clear and measurable targets.
However, challenges persist regarding implementation of best practices, like PAYT schemes and user-friendly door-to-door systems to improve collection rates and material purity. There is a growing attention on consumer behaviour changes and above all the need on strong public-private co-operation to achieve a circular economy.
Integrated food waste collection systems
Within this scenario, Italian specialist Mattiussi Ecologia can have its say, thanks to the long experience in innovating the design logic of waste collection bins and integrated systems while maintaining technical, technological, style and design excellence.
It is well known that Mattiussi Ecologia is currently one of the few players on the market to have the widest range of solutions available for segregate food waste, from kitchen caddies to kerbside solutions up to smart bins with real-time data collection.
The company operates in more than 40 countries globally and it is clear how the range of products and customization services are a milestone to adapt to the local needs, as the food waste global issue implies a multitude of local implementations, where one-size-fits-all is not an option.

Setting the rules with kerbside Zerømax
Mattiussi Ecologia’s Zerømax system is considered an industry frontrunner for an intensive kerbside collection. Designed upon clear user’s insights, its spherical base for easy cleaning and emptying allows for bagless collection of food waste, preventing the presence of microplastics that are currently much talked about. Zerømax has a special handle in air-moulding technique which makes it particularly sturdy as well as a front comb receiver for mechanical emptying, an optional odour filter in the lid, ergonomic rear and bottom grips, and reflectors with integrated RFID systems. Many features all-in-one, placing the product among those currently attracting the greatest interest globally. Zerømax is available in 25L and 30L versions.
At the forefront with Biox shelter series
Mattiussi Ecologia has been the first Company to introduce Biox, a line of premium metal shelters for wheeled bins, so much so that the first supply dates back to 2013 in Aberdeen, Scotland, paving the way for a more hygienic and aesthetically pleasant food waste collection. Widely imitated in the meantime, its elegant design makes it particularly suitable for installations in historic city centres, flats and communal spaces where decoration and separate food waste collection must go hand in hand. Lid shaped with a sloping angle to allow rainwater to run off, soft closing charging lid, front door with concealed hinges, and a wide list of accessories like electronic control access , volumetric pull-down aperture or free open top, external or integrated foot pedal and optional hand lever for accessible use, Biox has the ultimate goal to help the community finding an integrated solution for a more efficient food waste collection.
ESG Platinum rating and Ergonomics certification
Alongside innovation and design, Mattiussi Ecologia has been always attentive to health and safety for users and operators and embarked on the path to ergonomic certification already in 2022, establishing market standards through computerized handling and posture tests and analyses. These tests were developed jointly and in collaboration with ErgoCert, a certification body recognized by ACCREDIA in accordance with the ISO 17065 standard, valid in all IAF (International Accreditation Forum) member countries worldwide. Many other companies in the sector have been able to follow the path taken since then. In 2025 the company has achieved a platinum badge from EcoVadis, marking a further step into the ESG commitment.
