New 56 Tonne 836K Landfill Compactor from Caterpillar

Caterpillar has launched its 56 tonne 836K landfill compactor, the latest update to the 836 series which has been a staple for landfill operators for almost 20 years. According to the company the 419 kW (562 hp) machine offers improved fuel consumption thanks to its lock up torque converter, which also transfers more power to the ground, as well as its automatic engine and electrical system shutdown. The company added that the new machine also cuts fuel consumption by achieving greater momentum on grades and carrying that momentum through the shift points with the new APEC transmission control. In addition to fuel savings, Cat said that the 836K offers improved maintenance access with a single level upper platform, as well as a focus on safety with ground level or platform access to most major components. Caterpillar added that the compactor also offers increased comfort levels for the operator, with improved ingress/egress and totally redesigned cab with flip up armrest and enhanced visibility thanks to a rear view camera as standard. While the machine's top speed of 12.3 kph (7.6 mph) in its second direct drive reverse gear (top speed in its second direct drive forward gear is marginally less) may not be a winning statistic in a game of Top Trumps, its 3085 Nm (2275 lb-ft) of torque just might be. A video of the 836K landfill compactor in action, as well as details of some of its improved maintenance features can be seen below. Slovakia's Electric Avenue Last year, WMW’s plant, collection and transport correspondent, Malcolm Bates, was the first journalist to report on the diesel electric drive transmission developed by Caterpillar Corporation for the D7E. So naturally, when he got a chance to operate one on a landfill site in Slovakia recently, he grabbed it. The end result is an example to us all. But the experience gained in Finland now also forms the basis of a consultancy service to help establish turnkey operations in less developed markets.]
