New Bids Reignite Bahrains 390,000 tpa Waste to Energy Plans
Bids have been received for the US$480 million waste to energy project in Bahrain to treat 390,000 tonnes of waste per year. The Municipalities and Urban Planning Affairs Ministry received nine bids in total for the 25-year build-operate-transfer (BOT) project, according to Meed. Bidding groups are reported to include Saudi Arabia’s ACWA Power, France’s Suez Environment and Singapore/Malaysia consortium, Keppel/EAG. The Askar Waste to Energy PPP featured in KPMG’s Top 100 Infrastructure list (read WMW story), with the need for the project called “great” to deal with waste from the country’s capital and largest city, Manama. Around 25 MW of power is expected to be generated and fed into the grid, processed from waste from the one million tonnes produced by the nation each year.
