Doha based Qatar Airways and Qatar Aircraft Catering Company (QACC) have joined forces to launch a new waste reduction and recycling programme.

The airline said that the new initiative will introduce additional measures to minimise packaging, increase recycling and reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill.

Qatar Airways added that over the past three months, working in partnership with QACC, it has recycled 266 tonnes of materials including cardboard, plastic wrapping and a variety of plastic containers.

The materials have been collected by two local recycling firms, along with 6300 litres of cooking oil which will be converted into biodiesel.

“QACC’s focus on reducing waste is a core part of Qatar Airways’ commitment to the environment,” commented Qatar Airways Group chief executive, His Excellency Mr. Akbar Al Baker. “Recycling not only delivers efficiencies but reduces environmental impacts arising from waste disposal and the consumption of natural resources.

He added that the airline will continue to invest in local recycling infrastructure “to further drive environmental change in Qatar”.
