Cupertino, California based consumer electronics giant, Apple, has unveiled a robot which is able to disassemble at its "Loop You In" event last week

“When we think about the environment, we think about innovation,” said Lisa Jackson, Apple vice president for environment.

According to Jackson when it comes its iPhone take back program, the majority of the phones it receives are fit for reuse, and are found new homes. However, eventually these products all need to be recycled.

“We put an incredible amount of energy into designing the best products in the world,” she said. “And we put that same kind energy into thinking about what happens when they can no longer be reused.”

At this point Jackson introduced the crowd to the company’s new recycling robot, dubbed ‘Liam’.

Because Liam is able to automatically disassemble an iPhone, sorting each tiny component according material, it is expected to deliver high purity rates for recycling.

“Tungsten from the iPhone Alert module can be used to make a precision cutting tool,” explained Jackons. “And the silver from the motherboard can be used in solar panels.

“Ultimately our goal is to create breakthroughs that enable us to used those materials in our own products,” concluded Jackson.
