Kanadevia Inova has been awarded a contract by Sicily Biomethan S.r.l. for the development of a new wet anaerobic digestion (Wet AD) biogas plant with biomethane production in Castelvetrano, Sicily, Italy. Developed under the Italian DM2022 biogas decree framework, the project will be realised through a Design, Finance, Build, Own & Operate (DFBOO) model, with Kanadevia Inova holding a 90% ownership and controlling interest in the local project company, Sicily Biomethan S.r.l.

Under the terms of the turnkey EPC contract, Kanadevia Inova will be responsible for the plant's engineering, procurement and construction. The scope of work primarily includes anaerobic digestion technology, as well as feedstock pre-treatment systems, a biogas upgrading unit, and composting facilities for treated digestate.

The plant will produce biomethane from over 63,000 tonnes of input feedstocks per year, including organic municipal solid waste (OFMSW), food waste, and green cuttings. It will use Kanadevia Inova's proprietary wet anaerobic digestion (Wet AD) technology and feature one processing line with a biogas production capacity of approximately 4,420,000 Sm³ per year (520 Sm³ per hour). A membrane-based system from Kanadevia Inova’s M-Series will be used to upgrade the gas, converting the biogas into grid-quality biomethane in line with the plant’s processing capacity.

With an expected annual biomethane energy production of around 45.1 GWh (net), the project will contribute significantly to the region's sustainable energy supply and the promotion of the circular economy in Sicily.

In addition, Kanadevia Inova has concluded a 20-year operation and maintenance contract for the plant.

"This project highlights our strategic position in the growing European renewable gas market. Our proven Wet AD technology enables us to make a tangible contribution to decarbonisation and the sustainable use of organic waste,” says Fabio Dinale, Executive Vice President of Business Development at Kanadevia Inova.

Nicola Cariboni, Kanadevia Inova Schmack Biogas S.r.l.'s Project Development Director, adds: ‘Italy is a key market for biomethane projects. The Castelvetrano plant shows how innovative technologies and strong local partnerships can be successfully combined to drive the energy transition and boost regional economic development.”
