Energy from Waste : Kanadevia Inova acquires Dublin Waste to Energy facility
Kanadevia Inova, the Zurich-headquartered green-technology company, has reached financial close on its acquisition of the operations and maintenance team at the Dublin Waste to Energy Facility, marking a significant milestone for the Irish circular economy sector. The deal transfers approximately 60 highly specialised staff from Encyclis Ireland Operations into Kanadevia Inova's global workforce of 3,500, spread across 17 countries.
The agreement to purchase Encyclis Ireland Operations was first announced the previous year, pending regulatory and stakeholder clearance. With those approvals now secured, Kanadevia Inova formally assumes responsibility for a 38-year O&M contract at one of Ireland's most strategically important waste treatment installations.
Expanding capacity at the Poolbeg peninsula
Situated on the Poolbeg peninsula and operational since 2017, the Dublin facility was originally designed, built and commissioned by Kanadevia Inova under its former name, making this acquisition a notable homecoming of sorts. The plant was developed to serve the Greater Dublin Area and has become a cornerstone of the region's waste infrastructure.
The transaction goes beyond a straightforward change of operator. As part of the arrangement, the facility's refuse processing capacity is set to rise by 15%, bringing total annual throughput to 690,000 tonnes. To put that figure in perspective, the volume of compacted material diverted from landfill each year could fill close to 1,000 Olympic swimming pools.
Power generation for Irish households
The facility currently generates sufficient electricity to power 115,000 homes and is earmarked to supply district heating for up to 50,000 households. Following the capacity upgrade, both figures are expected to grow considerably, extending the plant's contribution to Ireland's low-carbon energy supply.
Thomas Feilenreiter, Executive Vice President Systems & Service Solutions at Kanadevia Inova, expressed enthusiasm about the transition: "We are delighted to officially welcome the Dublin O&M team into our global family. These are exceptional professionals with a strong track record in delivering performance year after year for the Dublin plant. They make the customer the hero of the story, and this makes them the perfect fit for Kanadevia Inova."
He added: "We look forward to providing an essential service for the communities of Dublin and beyond, and to expanding the plant's energy generation to provide low-carbon electricity for even more Irish households."
Boosting asset value through engineered upgrades
Industry observers will note that the Dublin deal exemplifies a broader strategic model that Kanadevia Inova has developed: assuming O&M guarantees at existing installations whilst simultaneously delivering engineered improvements that enhance the asset's value for owners and investors. The company brings this approach to bear across its portfolio of more than 1,600 completed reference projects worldwide, specialising in Waste to X and Renewable Gas solutions that convert residual materials into usable resources.
A comprehensive handover plan is in place to ensure continuity of the high performance standards that the Dublin plant has maintained under previous management, safeguarding the essential service it provides to the communities of the Greater Dublin Area.
