Australia Military Waste & Recycling Contract for Veolia

Veolia has signed a six year agreement to collect and manage waste and recycling for the Australian Military. The company explained that under the contract it will provide services including solid waste collection, recycling and resource recovery, medical and sanitary waste collection, and liquid and hazardous waste disposal for the Australian government’s Department of Defence. Veolia (Paris Euronext: VIE and NYSE: VE) added that an estimated 8000 bins and waste receptacles will be used over the length of the contract, in addition to 11 new waste collection and recycling vehicles, added to supplement its existing fleet. The contract will see Veolia provide services to over 300 Defence locations throughout Australia, with many said to be situated in remote and regional areas. As such, the company said that it intends to work with these local communities to deliver regional employment opportunities, whilst also engaging with local suppliers and contractors. As part of Veolia’s Reconciliation Action Plan, this contract will also contribute to the company’s indigenous employment target of 2.5% workforce representation over the next five years. According to Veolia’s general manager for collection services, the company will use its large operational presence across Australia, including many remote and regional areas, coupled with a focus on sustainable waste management, to help the Department of Defence minimise its waste related environmental impacts. The company added that the contract supports the Department of Defence’s 2010-2014 strategic environmental objectives including sustainable environmental management, resource efficiency and pollution prevention.
