New Hazardous Waste Recycling Facility for Remondis UK

The UK arm of German recycling and environmental services company, Remondis is to invest over £10 million in a state-of-the-art hazardous waste transfer and recycling facility in Prescot, Merseyside. The company said that the plant will be able to process up to 69,000 tonnes of materials such as paints, oils and laboratory smalls each year, and is believed the facility will be the most advanced of its kind in Europe. Remondis added that it aims to return as much material as possible to the commercial cycle through closed-loop recycling, and that operates a complete chain of services; from logistics and sorting, via pre-treatment and preparation, to the marketing of the reclaimed raw materials and fuels. Commenting on the plant, David Winstanley, managing director at Remondis UK said: “It will see our operational capacity increase by more than 330%, allowing for the safe and professional processing, transfer and treatment of significant volumes of hazardous and non-hazardous waste material. "This will include photographic film, paints, oils, cleaning products and laboratory smalls," he added. According to Winstanley the Carr Lane site, which is due for completion in late spring 2013, will be operational 24/7, 365 days per year, which means that as well as managing standard waste streams it will also be able to handle emergency spillage operations. “Carr Lane will be the first new build, fully compliant SG 506 site in the UK, and the best example of its kind, we believe, in Europe," continued Winstanley. "Throughout the build, we have maintained the principle of Best Available Technique (BAT) and this means that we are able to deliver ‘total’ containment." "All waste is handled within purpose-built structures with full monitoring systems for air and liquid waste emissions, which ensures nothing leaves the site without being checked,” he concluded. The company also noted that the development has provided a number of employment opportunities for the local community. The principal contractor on the build is Bolton-based Seddon Construction, which has taken on a number of Merseyside employees throughout the project, as well as working with local sub-contractors wherever possible. In addition, Remondis said that around 40 members of staff will move from its existing site near Bolton to the new Carr Lane plant, with further jobs being created as the business expands over the coming months.
