Worlds Largest Aluminium Recycling Plant Produces First Full Size Ingot

Atlanta, Georgia headquartered rolled aluminium producer, Novelis, has successfully cast the first production-sized ingot at its new facility Nachterstedt, Germany that will produce 400,000 tonnes per year of aluminium sheet ingot from recycled material. According to the company, the €200 million aluminium recycling facility is the largest plant of its kind the in world. Construction work at the facility began in March 2013 and the first equipment installed in November 2013. The company said that the successful casting of the first full-sized trial ingot, around 10 metres long, represents another important milestone leading to the planned production of full commercial volumes, and to the official opening in autumn this year. The new recycling centre will support the company’s drive to efforts increase its recycling activity in Europe, a region in which it said it is the leading recycler of used beverage cans. The company explained that the centre will process cans and numerous other forms of aluminium scrap from across continental Europe. Novelis added that it is still in the process of actively recruiting qualified candidates to fill the centre’s 200 new jobs.
