1000 Solar Panels Installed at Lakeside Waste to Energy Plant
The 37 MW Lakeside waste to energy facility, near Heathrow Airport’s Terminal 5, has been fitted with around 1000 solar photovoltaic panels covering around one third of its south facing curved roof. The facility, owned by a joint venture between Grundon Waste Management and Viridor – a part of the Pennon Group (LSE: PNN) - will now have the potential to export 250 kW peak solar power to the grid. The solar system was installed by BELECTRIC UK on the steeply curved roof under the take-off path for Heathrow airport. The company said that the particularly gusty autumn added to the challenge. According to Danny Coulston, director of operations at Lakeside, it was not a straightforward job because the curvature of the roof meant that very close attention had to be paid to health and safety. The installation required technicians to use abseiling techniques while working on the roof top. “Abseiling and operating on such a steeply curved roof at great height, under a take-off flight path from Heathrow Airport were just some of the distinctive hurdles,” commented Toddington Harper, BELECTRIC UK’s CEO.
