More Waste Gasification Plants to Follow After Deal with CoGen : 15MW Lockheed Martin Advanced Gasification Waste to Energy Plant for Wales
A new 15 MW waste to energy facility which will use advanced gasification technology is to be built in Cardiff, Wales following an agreement between CoGen and Lockheed Martin Energy.
According to Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) the plant will divert approximately 150,000 tonnes of waste per year, from landfill and construction is expected to begin in 2018, with operations commencing in 2020.
Under the agreement CoGen will serve as the owner and developer of the waste to energy project, while Lockheed Martin will lead the engineering, procurement, manufacturing and construction of the plant.
The facility will use Reformer® technology from Concord Blue – a strategic partner of Lockheed Martin. Described as an advanced gasification process, the technology which converts waste to energy through a process described as advanced gasification, the process is claimed to be able convert nearly any kind of organic waste into energy.
“This project will make a substantial contribution to Cardiff and will further showcase how bioenergy technologies can help reduce waste, decrease pollution and generate clean, renewable energy,” commented Frank Armijo, vice president of Lockheed Martin Energy.
In addition to the Wales project, Lockheed Martin and CoGen will jointly pursue other similar projects, and smaller-scale opportunities to develop energy-from-waste projects for commercial and industrial businesses throughout the UK.
“We’re looking forward to other projects where we can help businesses, manufacturers and UK municipal and regional governments address their critical waste and energy challenges,” said Armijo.
Ian Brooking, chief executive officer of CoGen Limited added: “Cardiff will be the first of a pipeline of projects that over the coming decade will see local, smaller-scale generation play a bigger part in delivering the UK’s energy requirements.”
