18 MW waste to energy plant powered by old cooking oil opened in UK
A power plant that recycles used cooking oil into 18 megawatts (MW) of power has been opened in Selby, North Yorkshire. REG Bio-Power will run the plant that will process oil collected through a partnership led by REG Living Fuels, which works by communities dropping off used cooking oil at 500 household recycling centres across the UK. Once collected, the oil is pumped into settling tanks, where it is left for between two and five weeks so that impurities in the oil collected during the cooking process settle to the bottom and be removed. The lighter, purer oil is then put through the second stage of our process, filtration. Once this has been achieved, the used cooking oil has been fully recovered and reclassified as an ‘end of waste’ bioliquid. Once recovered, LF100 is used either in a combined heat and power (CHP) units to generate power and allow “National Grid to support electricity supplies in times of unscheduled peak demand”, according to the company. With REG Living Fuels already applauding North Yorkshire for waste oil collections during 2014, local Yorkshire communities will also be helping reach Government targets of 80% carbon emission reduction by 2050. Ian Collins, managing director at REG Living Fuels, said: “Not only are our sites producing much-needed renewable energy but anyone who recycles their waste cooking oil is also helping cut the UK taxpayers’ £15m bill for repairing drains clogged with fat caused when oil is tipped down the sink.” The opening launch was attended by attended by local MP Nigel Adams along with the REG Bio-Power team members.
