Second Waste to Energy Contract from B&W Vølund This Year : €4m Fuel Handling Contract for Saxlund at 41 MW Waste to Energy Plant in Sheffield
Danish waste to energy technology manufacturer, Babcock & Wilcox Vølund, has placed an order with the biowaste material handling equipment supplier, the Saxlund Group, to supply machinery to the Templeborough Biomass Power Plant in Sheffield, UK.
Saxlund International is a subsidiary of Opcon – a Stockholm, Sweden based international energy and environmental group.
According to the company, the scope of the order is the design, manufacturing, delivery and commissioning of a dual automatic fuel handling system with reception and transport lines to the boiler, complete with cranes.
Saxlund explained that the entire fuel feeding system, including wood storage and conveyor systems will be designed to handle multi-fuel waste wood, as well as for efficiency, minimum maintenance and high availability and low emissions of dust and noise.
Total order value is said to be over 4 million Euros with commissioning and take-over set to take place in 2017.
“Saxlund has been contracted to design and install the fuel handling solution which will provide fuel reception, storage and conveyor systems to handle 260,000 tonnes per annum of locally sourced waste wood, to feed the combustion processes,” explained commented Matt Drew, European sales director and UK managing director of Saxlund International.
He added that this is Saxlund’s second UK biomass fuel handling contract this year with Babcock & Wilcox Volund.
“Biomass fired combined heat and power (CHP) solutions using low grade waste wood have a real part to play in meeting the UK’s 2020 renewable energy targets and Templeborough Biomass Power Plant in Sheffield is a great example,” Drew continued.
Due for completion in 2017 the new plant is expected to produce 41MW of electricity, enough to supply 78,000 homes.
“The Templeborough Biomass Power Plant has a multi-million pound long term deal with Stobart Biomass Products to source, process and supply the biomass feedstock for the plant. Schemes like these have the potential to tick all the boxes - contributing to UK renewable energy targets and a balanced energy economy, as well as waste recycling targets,” concluded Drew.
