Waste Firm Extends Deal to Process & Sell Household Recyclables : 60,000 TPA Kerbside Recycling Deal for Viridor in Kent
Dry kerbside recycling collected from households across West and Mid-Kent will continue to be processed and marketed by waste and recycling firm Viridor following a two year deal for the firm with an option for a further two year extension.
Viridor said that under the contract, which will officially commence in July, it will handle around 60,000 tonnes of recycling collected from households from across seven districts in Kent every year.
The materials, including paper, card, plastic bottles, cans and glass, will be transported to Viridor’s Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) in Crayford, south east London where they will be sorted using optical sortation, mechanical process and manual quality control.
Responding to challenging commodity market conditions over the last twelve months, Viridor said that it has developed the partnership with a ‘self-help’ style contract agreed. The contract sees both parties sharing an element of the risk that fluctuating commodity market price movements deliver.
The company added that it has also implemented an optimisation programme for material input specifications and processing methods at its Material Recycling Facility, meaning that a higher proportion of the material delivered is transformed into high quality recyclate.
“Being able to continue our partnership with Kent County Council is a fantastic move for Viridor, Kent County Council and the residents of the County,” commented Chris Jonas, director of business development for Viridor. “By working together we are able to increase the amount of material that Kent recycles by using a state-of-the-art Materials Recycling Facility and also increase the amount of high quality recyclate entering the manufacturing sector in our ever more circular economy.”
A spokesperson for Kent County Council added that the contract was awarded following a comprehensive procurement exercise involving a review of recycling and resource management services.
“We have worked with Viridor over the last few years and appreciate they are positioned at the cutting-edge of new technologies and as a result the Crayford Materials Recycling Facility enables us to recover the value from much of the material our residents place in their recycling bins every week,” said the spokesperson.
