7MW Waste to Energy Gasification Facility Underway in Milton Keynes, UK

Construction work is to start this month on AmeyCespa’s Waste Recovery Park in Milton Keynes which will use waste to energy gasification technology from Energos to process residual waste. The company explained that the facility will bring together three different technologies to treat any waste which has not been reused, recycled or composted. Mechanical treatment technology will extract recyclable materials from black sack waste, An anaerobic digester will treat any food or organic waste to generate renewable energy and an advanced thermal treatment gasification facility will turn any remaining. The gasification technology is to be supplied by Energos and is expected to process around 90,000 tonnes of residual waste each year, to produce a syngas which will be combusted to create high pressure steam that will generate around 7 MW of electricity via a turbine. The company explained that the first stage of developing the facility is the demolition of existing buildings at the site, which is expected to take around three months. Construction of the new facility is expected to be completed by January 2016, and will be followed by commissioning and testing periods before it is fully operational in September 2016. “The facility will make a huge difference to the amount of household waste being landfilled in the borough, as well as increasing recycling and generating enough electricity to power 11,000 homes each year. I look forward to seeing it take shape over the coming months, “ commented Paul Greenwell, managing director of AmeyCespa. Engineering and construction company, VolkerFitzpatrick, is AmeyCespa’s construction partner for the project and will carry out the civil engineering and building works. Once operational it is anticipated that the facility will help Milton Keynes reduce the amount of waste it sends to landfill to less than 5%.
