90,000 Tonne Food Waste to Biogas Plant for Wales
Image Credit: Shutterstock/ Sam72 15 March 2012 Waste management company, Shanks (LSE:SKS) has submitted a planning application to develop a 90,000 tpa biogas facility to handle 90,000 tonnes per year of food waste in South Wales. The company said that it made the application for the Anaerobic Digestion (AD) to Torfaen County Borough Council for the plant that will handle food waste collected from local households and businesses. According to an earlier report in the South Wales Argos, Shanks already has planning permission for a 120,000 tonnes a year capacity mechanical biological treatment plant at site. However, Shanks said that due to changes in national waste policy, endorsed by the Welsh Government, which mean that alternative waste treatment methods are now preferred, the company no longer plans to pursue this project. The planned AD plant at the company's New Inn location, near Pontypool site would produce enough energy to power at least 4000 homes, according to the company. Shanks has been shortlisted for the municipal food waste contracts for both the Heads of the Valleys Waste Partnership and the South West Wales Waste Partnership. The company said that it will be holding further public exhibitions to explain the latest proposals in the planning application to local residents and other interested parties, and to discuss the changes made to the scheme. Subject to receiving planning permission, the company said that it aims to have the plant operational in the first half of 2014.
