German recycling equipment manufacturer, ANDRITZ MeWa has completed an e-waste and end-of-life refrigerator recycling plant in the town of Karcag in eastern Hungary. The company said that the plant is designed to recycle 20,000 tonnes of electrical and electronic scrap as well as over 150,000 refrigerators each year and is the start of the new Eco-Centre currently being set up in Karcag to strengthen the eastern region of Hungary with several hundred new jobs. The equipment manufacturer added that the plant has been built to meet the very latest European environmental standards and help the region achieve a recycling quota of 95%. The plant is said to provide the operator with maximum of flexibility with different operating modes available depending on the application. The centre will use ANDRITZ MeWa's QZ 2000 cross-flow shredder for disintegration of bonded materials as well as the UG 1000 MSL granulator for reducing the material to a specific size. Parts containing hazardous substances, such as batteries and capacitors, are left intact during the process and can be removed afterwards. The manufacturer explained that harmful gases contained in the cooling liquids and insulation of refrigerators are completely removed by suction and collected. What remains are the fractions that contain valuable materials such as aluminum, copper, iron, and plastics, which can be removed with a suitable separation method and provided ready for sale.
