APP Signs 20m Plasma Gasification Waste to Energy Contact in Canada

APP's demonstration facility in Swindon,UK Swindon UK based waste to energy firm, Advanced Plasma Power (APP), has signed a contract to supply plasma gasification technology for a 20 MW waste to energy plant in the Port of Hamilton, Canada. APP explained that the facility is being developed by Port Fuels & Materials Services, Inc. and represents its first order for a full-scale commercial facility waste to energy facility using its proprietary plasma gasification technology. Ontario produces around 13 million tonnes of commercial and municipal waste annually, and according to APP the region is under pressure to develop alternative waste management strategies. Subject to final regulatory approval, the project in the Port of Hamilton will use APP’s Gasplasma® technology to process up to 170,000 tonnes of waste annually delivering power to the Canadian electricity grid. The company said that once operational the facility will process a wide range of waste streams produced in the Port of Hamilton region to deliver a clean, high quality syngas that will be used directly in gas engines to generate power. Construction on site is expected to start upon completion of consents and permitting, which are now well underway. ”The project will enable a significant step forward towards greater resource efficiency in the region and will respond to the huge pressures on existing waste infrastructure,” commented Robert Clark, COO and project head at Port Fuels & Materials Services. Clark is also COO at Leveraged Green Energy, a private equity investment fund organised to create, identify, acquire and manage renewable energy assets in select target countries in Central and Eastern Europe and in Canada. According to Rolf Stein, CEO of Advanced Plasma Power the contract, worth around £20 million, is a significant milestone for the commercialisation of the Gasplasma technology. “Furthermore, for the Port of Hamilton, it allows local waste to be treated as a valuable resource delivering a source of low carbon energy generation,” he said. Project history A letter dated 4 April 2014, sent by Robert Clark to Rose Caterini, City Clerk at Hamilton City Hall, stated that the Environmental Screening Process for the project will be carried out according to the Waste Management Projects Regulation (Ontario Regulation 101/07) of the Environmental Assessment Act and the Guide to Environmental Assessment Requirements for Waste Management Projects. The results will be documented in an Environmental Screening Report, which will be released for public and agency review. The letter added that stakeholder participation is an important part of the consultation process, and explained that Public Open House meetings would be held. The first of those meetings took place on 17 April 2014. A report that day by CBC noted that the Port Authority is backing the project, and would act as landlord for the facility if it goes ahead. “We see this green energy project as a positive addition to the evolving mix of new technologies and industries that make up Hamilton’s thriving commercial port district,” spokesperson Larissa Fenn is reported to have said in a statement. “If it proceeds, we would work with our tenant to prepare the site for development, as we do with all of our tenants.” The meeting of 17 April was also covered in the CHCH news report below. Plasma Gasification Waste to Energy Project to Inject Gas into the Grid A Swindon-based demonstration project – managed by National Grid, Advanced Plasma Power and Progressive Energy, will take household waste which would otherwise be landfilled or processed in a tradition thermal treatment waste to energy facility and produce gas for injection into the grid. Plasma Gasification Technology Licensed for Industria Advanced Plasma Power, a specialist in waste gasification, has entered into an exclusive licence arrangement with institutionally-funded Plasma Green Energy (PGE) to construct and operate Gasplasma plants globally utilising particular industrial wastes.
