CCAC High Level Assembly in Oslo, Norway, on 2 September
The Ministerial High Level Assembly for The Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC) to Reduce Short-Lived Climate Pollutants (SLCP) was held in Oslo, Norway, on 2 September. The High Level Assembly brought together 40 ministers and heads of CCAC Partner institutions – among them ISWA president David Newman - to direct the coalition's work. The CCAC has grown from seven partners to more than 70 in a little over 18 months. ISWA is a lead partner of CCAC's MSW (Municipal Solid Waste) initiative. The High Level Assembly focused on significantly bolstering financing for SLCP mitigation and better mainstreaming the SLCP agenda into the health community and its key institutions. Fast action to reduce Short-Lived Climate Pollutants (SLCPs) that 'live' from days up to a couple of decades in the atmosphere, has the potential to prevent millions of premature deaths each year, avoid annual losses of some of the world's staple crops and slow down the global warming expected by 2050 by as much as half a degree. ISWA Conference on Solid Waste Management and Recycling, in Wuhan, China, on 5 September The first ISWA Conference on Solid Waste Management and Recycling in China took place in Wuhan on 5 September. With over 400 participants from the waste industry and the Chinese government, the conference comprised of three sessions, focused on finance, policy and technical issues. Chinese experiences and perspectives on these topics were presented by government officials and highly respected professors from the academia; on the other hand, experiences of Europe, America and other parts of Asia were presented by prominent ISWA members, such as the chair of ISWA Working Group on Landfill, Derek Greedy, and the chair of ISWA Working Group on Energy Recovery, Bettina Kamuk, among many others. This conference once again showed the importance of creating platforms for information exchange, which not only facilitate technology transfer but also helps to understand the peculiar situations of a country before formulating conclusions or solutions. With ISWA's Chinese National Member, CAUES, after this very successful cooperation, ISWA now looks to develop a stronger link with China in the coming years and, together with other far-east National Members, to develop a strong regional network in Asia.
