China's Largest Waste to Energy Facility Set to Open
The 20 MW Hangu facility will be the largest waste to energy facility in China 18 April 2011 The largest waste to energy facility in China is duo to enter service by June this year in the city of Tianjin, on the country's northern coast, according to a spokesman for the Tianjin Electric Power Corporation. The 20 MW Hangu facility will feature three incineration lines and will be capable of treating 667,000 tonnes of the region's waste each year. Located in the Binhai new area of Tianjin, the plan is spread over an area of 13.2 hectares, and with largest completely sealed trash tank in China, offers enough storage capacity to hold 20,000 tonnes of waste. Tianjin Binhai New Area is a 2270 square kilometre cluster of industrial development zones with the highest concentration of industrial output in Northern China. Due to its rapid economic growth, the area is experiencing high levels of solid waste and pollution output. In 2007 over 5 million tonnes of solid waste was produced in the region. Equipment for the furnace, boiler and flue gas cleaning plant has been supplied by engineering company Keppel Seghers Belgium N.V. According to Tianjin Electric Power Corporation, with an advanced incineration system, the emission targets of the power plant meet European Union standards. On completion it is claimed that the plant will generate 146,000 GWh of electricity each year.
