Contract to Turn Windsor's Food Waste into Biogas & Fertiliser
Agrivert's existing Cassington AD plant is operating on a 20 year contract with Oxfordshire County Council. The 2.1 MW facility processes over 35,000 tonnes of solid waste a year, and 15,000 tonnes of liquid waste 28 February 2012 UK based organic waste treatment specialist, Agrivert has signed a 25 year contract with Covanta Energy to process organic and food waste for the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead. Covanta itself recently secured a contract to manage up to 45,000 tonnes per annum of waste from the Royal Borough. According to Agrivert it will recycle the food waste at its new Anaerobic Digestion (AD) plant at Wallingford, Oxfordshire, which is currently in construction, to produce energy and a valuable organic fertiliser. The company added that it sees the high quality of its biofertiliser as a key to the sustainability of its solution and has already identified local markets for the fertiliser. The new plant will be based on the design of the company's existing AD plant in Oxfordshire. The new facility is expected to provide enough energy to power over 4200 homes and the company will also compost green waste collected from households as part of the contract. Combined with other recycling initiatives, Agrivert claimed that the introduction of food waste collection and recycling will significantly increase the recycling performance of the Royal Borough. "Waste disposal is one of the borough's biggest bills and our approach to the contract negotiations was to nail down prices so that local council taxpayers will see tangible financial benefits over the next 25 years," commented councillor Phill Bicknell, cabinet member for highways, transport and environment. Agrivert said that it will also compost green waste collected from households as part of the contract. Awards The company said that is has also recently been shortlised for two West Oxfordshire Business Awards, which aim to recognise and reward the achievements of organisations based in West Oxfordshire. Agrivert has been shortlisted for the Abacus Events Green Business Award and the Blenheim Palace Rural Business Award.
