Des Moines Landfill Gas to Energy Facility to Expand to 11.2 MW
Houston, Texas based Waste Management (NYSE: WM) is to expand its landfill gas to energy facility in Des Moines, Iowa. The company said that its Des Moines Metro Methane Recovery Facility at the Metro Park East landfill in Polk County, will increase its output from 6.4 MW to 11.2 MW. WM explained that the plant is a result of its private-public partnership with the Metro Waste Authority, and that the electricity produced by the new facility is delivered to the Municipal Energy Agency of Nebraska (MEAN), a contract secured by Metro Waste Authority. According to Thomas Hadden, executive director of Metro Waste Authority, the partnership with Waste Management provides Metro Waste with another source of revenue to offset operational costs As part of the expansion the company said that it will add three addition landfill gas fuelled generators, with room for a fourth in the future.
