Digestate Contract at UK's Largest Food Waste AD Facility
Biffa's new 'Super' AD facility is seen by the company as the first of a new generation of large scale food waste plants 20 July 2011 Leeds, UK based biowaste recycling specialist, 4Recycling Ltd, has been awarded a three year contract by Biffa Waste Services to recycle digestate from its recently opened 120,000 tonne capacity Anaerobic Digestion (AD) food waste facility at Poplars, Staffordshire. Biffa's £24 million new facility receives source segregated food waste from supermarkets, food and drink manufacturers, hotels, restaurants, caterers and homes. The waste is treated in five digester tanks and generates enough gas to power three 2 MW gas engines that export electricity to the national grid, and more than enough heat for the facilities own requirements. Production of digestate to PAS 110 standard at the Poplars facility is likely to commence later in the year. 4Recycling Ltd - which already has agreements in place to supply PAS 110 material for use as a fertiliser - says that it will provide a complete technical, transport and recycling service for both solids and liquids working with local contractors and landowners to provide a continuous service for the plant. Mike Holt, Managing Director of the 4R Group explains that the company's technicians work with clients to develop value added fertiliser replacements, which are then marketed through the 4R Products business. "This is an essential activity given the government's focus on delivering a zero waste economy - developing markets for these products will be a key test for the Coalition," he adds.
