ENER-G Contract at 40,000 TPA Food Waste to Biogas Plant in Fife
Manchester, UK based on-site energy firm, ENER-G has been awarded a contract to supply a combined heat and power (CHP) system for its new anaerobic digestion facility at Lochhead landfill site in Dunfermline, Scotland Under the contract, which has been awarded by Fife Council, ENER-G will supply its biogas generation system that utilises an MTU engine to achieve 42% electrical efficiency. According to the company that makes it one of the most efficient biogas engines on the market. The Fife anaerobic digestion plant, which is expected to begin generating power later this year, will process up to 40,000 tonnes of local food and garden waste, and produce up to 1.4 MW of electricity and heat. ENER-G explained that the heat will supply the Council's existing district heating system and has the potential to meet all of the heating needs of the local Queen Margaret Hospital. The company added that it will finance, develop, install and operate the biogas generation facility at no upfront cost to the Council. The Council will recover Feed in Tariff (FiT) payments on the export of electricity to the local network over the 25 year contract period. The facility is also expected to achieve carbon dioxide savings in excess of 7200 tonnes per year, equivalent to the carbon sequestered by 590 acres forest or removing 2400 cars from the road each year. It plant will also produce an organic fertiliser, which the company said will enable it to supply up to 10,000 tonnes of compost per year to local farms. “We believe that turning food and garden waste at Lochhead into power and heat could save the council around £1.2 million each year,” commented Chris Ewing, environmental sustainability manager for Fife Council. “It will also contribute to our improving recycling rates, which were 55.5% in 2012 for household and commercial waste,” he added. ENER-G said that it also developed the Council's 2 MW landfill gas generation facility at Lochhead, which it has now operated for more than 5 years.
