Energos Waste Gasification Technology Selected for UK Waste to Energy Plant

Machester, UK based waste gasification technology supplier, Energos has been appointed as technology provider for an advanced thermal conversion facility as part of AmeyCespa's proposed Milton Keynes Waste Recovery Park. The proposed Waste Recovery Park comprises a three-stage waste treatment process to treat household waste (See WMW Story). The plant will feature mechanical treatment technologies to sort recyclates, anaerobic digestion to produce biogas from the organic fraction and advanced thermal treatment to recover energy from residual waste which cannot be recycled. A planning application is currently being considered by planners and, if approved, would become operational in 2016. Energos explained that its Advanced Conversion Technology (ACT) would be used at the final stage of the process to produce syngas for the production of high temperature steam that will drive a turbine to generate electricity. The technology supplier said that the facility would be able to process more than 90,000 tonnes of residual waste, and could generate 7 MW of electricity - enough to power around 11,000 homes. According to Energos its patented gasification technology provides a best practice local solution for the local treatment of non-recyclable municipal, commercial and industrial waste. The company added that it built and manages the UK's first and only operational waste fuelled Advanced Conversion Technology facility on the Isle of Wight, and that over the past 15 years it has developed seven other plants - with more than a total 550,000 hours of operation - in Norway and Germany. Energos is also building its second UK gasification facility at Glasgow City Council's Recycling and Renewable Energy Centre. Commenting on the facility, Nick Dawber, managing director of Energos said: “This would provide the community with an environmentally responsible, small-scale energy from waste solution that will ensure the diversion of biodegradable material from landfill.” Dawber also noted that the plant will be eligible for double Renewables Obligation Certificates (ROCs).
