First of Eight MT-Energie Biogas to Grid Anaerobic Digestion Plants Opened in France
The first of eight anaerobic digestions biogas to grid facilities being developed by German biogas technology supplier, MT-Energie in France has begun injecting upgraded bio-methane into the grid. The company explained that behind the eight biogas to grid projects are a group of farmers from the Champagne region, south of Paris, who decided to become energy entrepreneurs last year. Biogas is produced from a combination of agricultural wastes and residues, as well as cover crops and is then purified through a gas separation process which MT-Energie said uses Evonik membrane modules. The company added that each of the eight facilities features a triple-tank design and an output of capacity of treated gas of 250 Nm3, which is equivalent to generating around 500 kW of electrical energy from waste. The first plant was said to have passed its mechanical and biological commissioning in less than one month and all eight projects are expected to be complete by the end of 2016. “Opting for biogas upgrading to bio-methane can be a profitable alternative to traditional CHP concepts, producing only electricity,” explained Timo Vaske, a bio-methane specialist at MT-Energie. “Some countries, such as Germany, France, the UK, Italy, are recognising the contribution of AD to gas self-sufficiency, by issuing favourable incentives,” he continued. “In some cases, for example in the eight French projects, the electrical grid connection was also not suitable for the power produced, while the connection to the gas grid was carried out without problems”. The technology was supplied by MT-Energie in conjunction with its sister company MT-Biomethan. MT-Energie added that it in Germany it has recently officially inaugurated the largest biogas upgrading plant with gas injection into the grid that it has ever built.
