Food Waste Anaerobic Digester for Somerset

04 October 2011 Waste management company, Viridor is to build its first Anaerobic Digestion (AD) facility in the South West of England at its Walpole recycling and landfill site, near Bridgwater in Somerset. According to the company, the proposed £10 million facility will initially be configured to produce 1 MW of surplus electricity for export to the National Grid, with the possibility of producing clean gas for injection into the gas grid also under review. Phase One of the development will provide 30,000 tonnes of capacity of 30,000, with up to 21,000 tonnes available for the Somerset Waste Partnership's food waste collections (subject to SCC approval). The company says that the remainder will cater for South West commercial customers producing food and organic wastes. Viridor says that it is currently in the detailed design phase of the project, with ground works due to start imminently and construction expected to begin in early 2012. The Walpole site is already generating around 3 MW through its landfill gas to energy facility. Viridor's SW Regional Director Richard Jenkins said: "[The] Walpole AD plant will help to transform food and organic wastes from households, restaurants and food businesses across the county into renewable energy and a recycled soil conditioner."
