HSM Baler Helps Smurfit Kappa Manage Waste Paper & Cardboard in Neuburg
Dublin, Ireland headquartered paper packaging producer, Smurfit Kappa (LSE: SKG), has installed a fully-automatic HSM VK 7215 FU channel baling press at its plant in Neuburg, Germany. German baling equipment manufacturer, HSM, explained that the new baler operates with a pressing force of 720 kN and features a frequency-regulated drive. The new machine is being used to bale shredded cardboard, scraps of paper, cardboard and sheets of paper up to a maximum material size of 1.1 x 1.4 metres, as well as some some one and two-ply corrugated cardboard. The shredded material is fed into the fully-automatic channel baling press using air technology and the larger cardboard and sheets of paper are fed manually through a bevelled loading hopper. In practical use at the Smurfit Kappa facility, the HSM VK 7215 FU achieves a throughput capacity of four tonnes per hour. HSM noted that over a three-shift operation up to 96 tonnes of material are processed every day – with a main drive power of just 45 kW. Depending on the material, the bales can reach a weight of up to 600 kg, producing a bale format of 1100 x 750 x 1200 mm (width x height x length) which HSM said can be easily sold for recycling. The frequency-controlled drive is said to optimise the unit’s energy efficiency. Power consumption is reduced by up to 40% compared with conventional drive technology. Along with the energy savings, the frequency-controlled drive provides other benefits, such as potential process optimisation by adjusting the speed to the production process and other external factors. According to HSM, the gentle operation of the motor also reduces the number of starts and stops, and avoids any unnecessarily harsh loading of the machine components.
