100,000 TPA Dry Anaerobic Digestion Plant for Bologna : HZI to Supply Kompogas Technology to Europe’s Largest Dry AD Plant in Italy

Italian waste and recycling firm, HERAmbiente SpA, is to use Kompogas® dry anaerobic digestion technology from Swiss waste to energy technology supplier Hitachi Zosen Inova AG at its planned organic waste treatment facility in Bologna.

According to HZI, once complete the 100,000 tonne per year plant will be Europe’s largest dry anaerobic digestion plant, treating organic waste from the city of Bologna and its surrounding area using methane fermentation technology.

The Dry AD equipment is to be supplied through Cesaro Mac. Import SpA (CMI), the exclusive licensee of of Kompogas® technology in Italy.

CMI will use four steel digesters, forming the core module of the Kompogas plant, supplied by HZI.

The plant is expected to produce around 14,287,000 Nm3 of biogas from annually for injection into Bologna's gas grid. It is also planned to produce some 30,000 tonnes of compost for sale to farms and garden centers in the region.

Construction work is expected to begin in July 2016, with delivery of the digesters by HZI scheduled for the third quarter of 2016 and completion in June 2018.

HZI acquired the Kompogas assets of Axpo Kompogas Engineering AG (Switzerland) in 2014.
