ISWA Blog: Event to Tackle Waste Management Issues in South & East Europe

Alexei Atudorei discusses a number of upcoming events for the year, starting in March, which are being organised by the International Solid Waste Association (ISWA) and its members in south and east Europe. Countries from Eastern Europe have problems in implementation of integrated waste management. Especially important is the communication with public, officials and other stakeholders. The communication aspects of waste management will be discussed at the International Scientific Symposium “The role of communication in waste management” organised between 19 and 21 March by Croatian Waste Management Association (HUGO), in the beautiful island of Zadar, Croatia. Objectives of the symposium are: Underline the importance of communication (information, education, raising awareness and dialog) in achieving ambitious UE targets in the field of waste management Present and exchange examples of good practice Discuss issues connected with the level of public information and awareness of its role of establishing an integrated system of waste management Enable a constructive exchange of views aiming at improving practice. Topics are: strategic approach to communication and raising public awareness; participation of the public and establishment of dialogues with the communities in procedures of planning and construction of waste management centers; influence of ecological activism on the implementation of the projects; role of media in communication of issues related to waste management and in creating the public opinion; managing risk and crisis communication; efficient tools and canals in communication; the role of public survey in establishing an integrated waste management system; aso.
