Milton Keynes Waste to Supply FCC's New Recycling Facility
29 November 2012 Milton Keynes Council has awarded a new waste treatment contract to FCC Environment which will see 50,000 tonnes of household waste diverted from landfill and into recycling and energy recovery from 2013. According to the company - formerly WRG and a part of Madrid, Spain based infrastructure company, Fomento de Construcciones y Contratas (IBEX: FCC) - the contract was awarded ahead of the opening of a new materials recycling facility (MRF) at Bletchley landfill site. FCC said that the new facility will process up to 100,000 tonnes of municipal and commercial waste each year. Under the new contract household waste from across Milton Keynes will be delivered to the new MRF at Bletchley instead of being sent straight to landfill. "FCC Environment has operated the Milton Keynes Council waste disposal contract for a number of years. However, we now have the capability to divert that waste away from landfill and into recycling and energy recovery," explained Gordon Fergus, head of commercial development at FCC Environment. According to Andy Hudson, head of environment and waste at Milton Keynes Council, Milton Keynes is focused on reducing waste to landfill whilst improving environmental performance across the borough. "This new contract with FCC Environment will help significantly with Milton Keynes' ambition of zero waste to landfill," he commented. Residual waste which cannot be recycled will be used to produce a solid recovered fuel.
