Department of Environmental Protection Facility First in US to Achieve Certification : Montgomery County Garden Waste Composting Secures ISO14001:2015
In Maryland, Montgomery County’s Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) garden waste composting facility in Dickerson has become the first composting centre in the US to secure ISO14001:2015 certification.
Awarded by the International Organization for Standardization Certification DEP explained that in order to achieve ISO14001:2015 status the composting facility follows stringent guidelines in recycling yard waste. The standard places an emphasis on safety, efficiency and protection of the environment.
To become certified the department said that the facility demonstrated that its operations adheres to, or exceed, compliance with all environmental rules and regulations. Additionally, all facility operators and employees consistently follow environmental best practices and identify and mitigate potential environmental negative impacts.
“This certification of conformance with the rigorous ISO standards demonstrates DEP’s commitment to strive to improve environmental performance beyond regulatory requirements,” commented DEP director, Lisa Feldt.
The Yard Trim Composting Facility began composting yard trim in 1983. By composting leaves and grass clippings that would have normally been disposed of in a landfill, DEP converts yard waste into a valuable resource.
The facility was also the second facility in the U.S. to achieve ISO4001:2004 certification in July 2013.
