New Construction Waste Recycling Facility for Fort Wayne

Indiana based recycling company, Earth First has opened a new 20,000 square foot (1850 square metre) construction and demolition recycling centre and transfer facility in Fort Wayne. According to the company the facility represents an investment of over $2 million dollars and is Northeast Indiana’s only complete (C&D) recycling operation. The recycler added that the new facility will address increasing regional and national demands for sustainability through the reuse and recycling of a large number of construction materials, most of which currently go into nearby landfills every day. The materials which the facility will recover include brick, concrete, drywall, wood, shingles, cardboard, plastics, metals and paper. According to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency figures, C&D materials account for nearly 40% of the national municipal solid waste stream. Earth First claimed that its new plant has the ability to recycle 50% - 60% of that material - above the national average. The company said that it has implemented unique recycling/reuse streams for these materials such as drywall to be ground and spread across lime deficient farm fields, wood to be used in the creation of animal bedding and shingles to be ground and reused in new asphalt paving. Earth First added that it is able to accommodate all LEED based and 'green' construction projects as well as work with customers to implement new sustainable business practices. The facility, which the company said will create 15 jobs, will also accept general waste from the public.
