New Contract for Wheelabrator's 66 MW Broward Waste to Energy Plant
30 August 2012 Wheelabrator Technologies - a subsidiary of Houston, Texas based Waste Management (NYSE: WM) which specialises in waste to energy - has been awarded an exclusive five-year contract by the Broward County Commission for disposal of the county's municipal solid waste and bulk trash. The company said that effective July 2013 the agreement extends its long-standing relationship with Broward County, Florida. Further to this the commission approved an inter-local agreement (ILA) which allows Broward municipalities to receive solid waste disposal under the same terms and conditions. According to Wheelabrator municipalities can also now arrange for the county to manage administrative functions associated with the solid waste disposal process, including code enforcement, centralised billing, flow control and delinquent account collection, among others. The company said that it currently treats 4500 tons (4080 tonnes) of county's solid waste each day, generating 66 MW of electricity - enough energy to power 100,000 homes daily and offset the need for 2.4 million barrels of imported oil each year. The Florida Legislature has defined the company's waste to energy process as recycling, enabling Broward cities to make meaningful progress toward meeting the state's recycling goal of 75% by 2020. Wheelabrator vice president of operations, Bill Roberts added that the company's Broward facility recovers 30,000 tons (27,200 tonnes) of metal annually.
